Government anticipates possible conflicts with region’s minority groups.

YANGON—Myanmar’s military is moving large numbers of soldiers to border areas near China and Thailand in anticipation of possible conflicts with ethnic rebels in those areas before elections this year, according to diplomats, intelligence experts and residents who are tracking the activities.

Details about the buildup, including the total number of troops involved, are unclear.

NEW DELHI — India’s Maoist rebels aim to overthrow the Indian state by 2050, a top government official was quoted Saturday as saying, warning security forces faced a “long, bloody war” to defeat the rebels.

The Maoists are taking a gradual approach to building their forces for a “final and lethal assault, aiming to overthrow the government by 2050 or 2060,” said India’s home secretary G.K. Pillai, citing documents seized in raids.

Singapore Warns Of Strait Attack — Wall Street Journal

SINGAPORE–Terrorists may be planning attacks on oil tankers and other large ships in the Malacca Strait, the Singapore Shipping Association said Thursday, citing an advisory from the Singapore Navy.

The warning, if accurate, may signal a tactical shift for terrorist groups operating in the region that would include sea-based targets.

The navy’s Information Fusion Centre “received an indication that a terrorist group is planning attacks on oil tankers in the Malacca Straits,” it said in the advisory, which was reviewed by Dow Jones Newswires.
