President Obama’s plans for reducing America’s nuclear arsenal and defeating Iran’s missiles rely heavily on a new generation of antimissile defenses, which last year he called “proven and effective.”

His confidence in the heart of the system, a rocket-powered interceptor known as the SM-3, was particularly notable because as a senator and presidential candidate he had previously criticized antimissile arms.

Ukraine: Tymoshenko Vows To Contest Election Result — BBC

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has vowed to challenge the results of the country’s recent presidential elections in court.

In her first public comments since Viktor Yanukovych was officially declared the winner, Mrs Tymoshenko said the ballot was rigged.

Mr Yanukovych has called on his rival to abandon her protests and resign.

International observers gave the election a clean bill of health, saying Mr Yanukovych won by a margin of 3.48%.

Piñera Wins Chiles’s Presidential Run-Off — The Telegraph

Sebastian Piñera won Chile’s presidential election yesterday, ending two decades of centre-Left rule since the end of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship.

The ruling coalition’s candidate Eduardo Frei conceded defeat to the billionaire after 60 per cent of polling stations reported a 52 per cent to 48 per cent advantage for Mr Pinera.

Mr Piñera had a wide lead in every poll, and the race only tightened after Mr Frei and outgoing President Michelle Bachelet repeatedly invoked the legacy of Pinochet, whose dictatorship was supported by parties that make up Mr Piñera’s coalition.
