Barack Obama’s national security adviser, Gen James Jones, has indicated the President may be prepared to meet Mahmoud Ahmadinejad if the regime resumed negotiations over its nuclear programme.

The retired general also indicated that the return of three American hikers held in Iran for the past year would be an “important gesture”.

Earlier this month, Mr Ahmadinejad requested face-to-face talks with Mr Obama during the UN General Assembly meeting in New York.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a Tehran conference Saturday that whoever controls the Middle East controls the world, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported.

In a speech during a conference marking 30 years to the Islamic Revolution, Ahamdinejad reportedly implied that Iran is the top power in the Middle East.

Obama Security Adviser Says Bomb Report A Shocker — Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Americans will feel “a certain shock” from a White House report to be released on Thursday on security lapses in the attempted December 25 bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner, U.S. national security adviser James Jones said in a USA Today interview.

President Barack Obama “is legitimately and correctly alarmed that things that were available, bits of information that were available, patterns of behavior that were available, were not acted on,” Jones said in the interview published on Thursday.

SENIOR White House officials yesterday offered accounts of the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden and the extent of United States intelligence on the al-Qaeda figurehead.

Most recent US estimates have placed bin Laden inside Pakistan, but national security adviser James Jones said the best estimate was that he “is somewhere in North Waziristan, sometimes on the Pakistani side of the border, sometimes on the Afghan side of the border”.
