Britain’s most senior officer killed in Afghanistan suffered a final insult in death because of a lack of helicopters on the front line.

Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, 39, was killed by a Taliban roadside bomb in July last year after warning that the shortage of aircraft was putting lives at risk.

The Daily Mail can now reveal that soldiers who watched their commanding officer die were then forced to look after some of his remains for three days because there were no helicopters available to collect them.

Britain’s special forces have been dealt a devastating blow that has seen the number of elite Special Air Service (SAS) personnel on active duty slashed.

The move was condemned last night by leading SAS figures as “madness” which will result in the loss of some of the country’s most experienced and senior special forces personnel.

The dozens of soldiers axed – who were informed last week – include some of the SAS’s best men, whose efforts have been crucial in a series of successful missions to kill or capture senior Taliban commanders in Afghanistan.

The raw trainees have no military experience and are not trusted with real weapons as they are put through their paces by Western instructors.

Recruits to the Afghan National Police (ANP) include farmers, shop owners and students and they are trained by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) – formed by police officers from countries including Britain.
