Darfur News Updates — July 5, 2009
A lot of attention has (rightly) been paid to innocent civilians in Darfur. There’s been less attention, however, on the U.N.-African Union peacekeepers sent to protect the civilians from Sudanese militias, troops and bandits. Despite being under-manned, under-equipped, and at times even lacking food and shelter, the UNAMID peacekeepers have been moderately successful at keeping civilians out of the cross-fire. Under the circumstances, the accomplishments of the force and its leader, Nigerian General Martin Luther Agwai, are quite impressive. Granted, that says more about our reduced expectations, than objective results.
